will post a question asking how something can be modeled.
This is the result. I'm not sure what an elliptical spring can be
used for, but I'm sure you can find good techniques in there.

Use a drag handle to make the spiral wind and unwind. A few
simple equations make this demo come to life. Use this as a
starting point for creating roll feeds. Note: Two rebuilds are
required for each drag. Drag in small increments!

An assembly consisting of several "flex joints". A 3D curve is
then wrapped around each joint to simulate a helix. Three
different drag handles control the height, pitch and angles.
